The public space around Loughborough Junction is set to be revolutionised as part of the plans to create a new, attractive town centre.
In a bid to make the area a more pleasant and sociable place to live, safer for school children and residents, and more cycle and pedestrian friendly, Lambeth council is planning to close a section of Loughborough Road and some smaller surrounding roads.
The road closures will be experimental and are designed to create a safe public space without the constant traffic flow that sees up to 13,000 vehicles pass through on a typical week day.
They will come into force on 29 August for six months.
Cllr Jennifer Brathwaite, Lambeth’s cabinet member for Environment & Sustainability, said: “In keeping with our priorities for the borough as a whole, we want to transform Loughborough Junction with open public spaces, safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, environmental improvements and a greater mix of retail outlets.
“I am confident that the removal of traffic will help us create a better physical and social environment and enhance the community in Loughborough Junction, making it a happier and safer place to live.”
A collection of experimental road closures in the surrounding area are designed to minimise the knock-on congestion, including Barrington Road, Calais Street, Padfield Road, Lilford Road and Gordon Grove.
Ongoing engagement with local residents and businesses, as well as traffic and air quality monitoring, will take place during the closures. The council will review the scheme after three months to see if the closures are working, if extra changes are needed or if the experiment should stop.
A full review at six months will determine any future, more permanent plans.
Local police have been supportive of the plans and emergency services will not be affected.
