Lambeth council has announced that a community centre in a newly refurbished library will be named after the late Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Mark Bennett.
The Tudor Room at Streatham Library, which is set to be a “community and cultural space”, will be renamed to recognise Cllr Bennett, who died last month of a suspected heart attack. He was 44.
Cllr Bennett represented Streatham South from 2005 until his death. He was the serving Mayor of Lambeth.
Leader of Lambeth council, Cllr Lib Peck said: “ As Mayor, Mark was a great community advocate and since his untimely death, there have been widespread calls for a permanent memorial to him.
“This is the first community centre to be opened since his death and it seems a fitting memorial that it will be The Mark Bennett Streatham Centre.
“Mark would have been delighted to see the restoration of this wonderful building, reflecting his love of history, literature and art and his dedication to Streatham.”
