Streatham’s brand new ice and leisure centre will open to the public on November 18th at the same time as the new Tesco superstore. The centre, which replaces the much loved Streatham ice rink that closed in 2011, will provide:
• An ice rink with 1,000 rink side seats for spectators, skaters, ice hockey players and officials
• A six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool
• A four court sports hall
• A 13-metre teaching pool
• 100 gym stations
The £26m project has been jointly funded by Lambeth Council and Tesco.
The overall development incorporates the new supermarket, over 200 new homes and will have provided almost a thousand jobs during the construction phase and afterwards.
Cllr. Lib Peck, leader of Lambeth council said: “The entire project has been a triumph of design and construction – it’s only the second time in the world that an ice rink has been built above a swimming pool. I know people will be very impressed when they see it. What’s really exciting is that this is more than a leisure centre, it’s created hundreds of homes and jobs too but none of it would have been possible without our partnership with Tesco.”
The temporary ice rink at Brixton will remain open until November 18th and there’ll be an official opening of the Streatham centre in December .
