Clapham Fire Station saved from closure

Speaking after the Mayor of London’s decision to force his Fire Brigade cuts plan through the London Fire Authority today (5th August 2013), Cllr Jack Hopkins, Lambeth’s cabinet member for Safer and Stronger Communities said,

“While I am delighted that Clapham Fire Station has been saved from closure, I am disappointed that the Mayor has not withdrawn his plan to close 10 London fire stations. This will make Londoners less safe and out more pressure on Clapham station.

‘Clapham fire station was saved thanks to the thousands of residents and hundreds of businesses who backed the campaign. Lambeth had the best attended public meeting of any London borough about the fire station closures and we had the biggest petition in London.

‘Boris Johnson couldn’t ignore our campaign and he couldn’t ignore the overwhelming evidence that showed how closing Clapham fire station would put lives at risk.”
