Lambeth council has launched a new Lambeth Country Show voluntary contribution scheme to maintain the tradition of free entry to south London’s biggest and best community festival.
Donations can be made online and by text as well in cash to volunteers at the entrance ways at the event in Brockwell Park on July 20 and July 21. This will help meet the £400,000 cost to Lambeth council of putting on the event.
Councillor Sally Prentice, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “The Lambeth Country Show is fantastic celebration of our community. It’s is hugely popular, attracting more than 150,000 people every year.
“Many other local authorities have decided to either cut completely or introduce charges to attend their community festivals. We are committed to maintaining the Lambeth Country Show as a free event and are asking residents to help us meet the cost.”
Contributions to the Country Show fund can be made online and by text – with 60 per cent of the money supporting the show and 40 per cent supporting a number of local charities and community groups.
This year more than 90 charity and community groups will be at the Lambeth Country Show, and Lambeth Council helps subsidise their attendance.
The new fund has been started to ensure the continuing success of the show. The rest of the money will go to the Lambeth Giving Fund which supports six charities working with young people, older people and people with mental health problems.
Cllr Prentice said: “Next year will be the 40th anniversary event and we will help as many charity and community groups to run stalls at the show as possible. The new Lambeth Country Show Fund will help us achieve that goal, and support charities in the borough.”
