Tesfamariam Okbamichael and Mebrat Berhane have been named ‘Lambeth’s foster carer of the year’. Tesfamariam and Mebrat who have fostered for 7 years in Lambeth, were presented with a certificate and High Street vouchers at a special reception hosted by the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Mark Bennett and Cllr Wellbelove on Wednesday 22nd May 2013.
Tesfamariam and Mebrat were chosen by a panel out of 30 carers, who were nominated by staff and members of the public as part of a competition.
Tesfamariam said: “We are really pleased to have won. Fostering is so important as we are all that the child has – we are here to help, carry and love them.”
Mebrat added, “Through fostering we have an extended family and even when a child leaves care we keep in touch and still offer our support.” The couple have fostered three children plus a siblings group of four.
Cllr Bennett said: “I would like to offer my congratulations to Tesfamariam and Mebrat. They have shown great commitment in creating a warm and family home for Lambeth children. Tesfamariam and Mebrat, like all of our wonderful foster carers, provide love and care to children, which makes a huge difference to their lives.”
The panel named Teresa Hustad was as the runner-up to Tesfamariam and Mebrat and was also invited to the presentation event to receive a certificate from the Mayor and her prize of High Street vouchers.
Lambeth Council is encouraging residents to become foster carers to help us support children in care. Anyone can apply – all applicants need is a room in their home and time to provide a child with some stability and care for however long they need it. Foster carers get an induction, ongoing training, and support from Lambeth’s fostering team and social workers plus a generous weekly tax free allowance for each child they foster.
