Visitors to one of London’s best loved open spaces will be able to check their emails and browse the internet when Wi-Fi is introduced to Clapham Common this week.
Park users will be able to browse the web, use social networking sites, and connect to email, all for free, when Wi-Fi is introduced at the Clapham Common bandstand.
The new service is a result of a partnership between Lambeth Council, which manages Clapham Common, and technology company Etherlive. It’s being introduced at no cost to Lambeth Council. The Wi-Fi service will help major event organisers when they are setting up for cultural events like the South West Four Festival in August, and when it is not used to its full capacity for live events, Lambeth Council is offering common users a free Wi-Fi hotspot. The cost of installing the Wi-Fi is being met by Etherlive.
Cllr Sally Prentice, Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Culture, said:
“Free Wi-Fi is a fantastic addition to the Common and I’m sure it’s going to prove really popular. These days people want to be able to access the internet on the move. Clapham Common is one of London’s most popular open spaces and is visited by thousands of people a day in the summer months.”
Tom McInerney, director of Etherlive said, “Clapham Common hosts some really popular live events and we are pleased to be able to invest in the site. Organisers and everyday park users are fixed on using the internet in their daily lives and it is refreshing to see a council take such a forward thinking approach to its local residents.”
