Lambeth Council is seeking views of future development plans for Vauxhall that aim to recreate an attractive riverside town centre at Vauxhall Cross.
The council is currently preparing a supplementary planning document (SPD) for the Vauxhall and Albert Embankment are that will guide development in that area for the next few years and it wants to hear people’s views about what should be the priorities.
The council is putting forward a number of ideas that will make it clear what kind of development will be welcome. This includes the creation of a new public square that would provide a focus for the area, and the potential for replacing Vauxhall bus station with bus stops along a new high street lined with shops.
To get involved and make their voice heard people are encouraged to come along to two open days next week. These will be held on 14 and 15 March 2012 between 3pm to 8pm at Unit 13A, St George Wharf, Vauxhall SW8 2LL. All are welcome.
Cllr Steve Reed, Leader Lambeth Council, said
“We are determined that any future development in the area brings improvements and benefits for the local community. We want to create a proper Town Centre in Vauxhall and remove the physical barriers, like the gyratory, that make this difficult. The SPD will set out what improvements local people and the council want, making it clear to developers what will be acceptable and how they will be expected to contribute.”
Many local residents complain that the current road layout, which includes a gyratory system with up to five lanes of traffic, and the railway viaduct act as barriers to pedestrians and cyclists and prevent the area from having a distinctive heart. The Council wants to consider ambitious plans to remove the gyratory and reintroduce two way walking to get a better balance between cars, walking and cycling.
Once adopted, the SPD will provide a clear blueprint for the future regeneration of the area.
The open days are just the start of the consultation process. A number of events this summer will support the formal consultation on the draft SPD document.
Vauxhall Town Centre would be a district centre in accordance with the adopted policy in the London Plan
