British Wheelchair Basketball Association in partnership with Lambeth Council Sports and Recreation Service, Greenwich Leisure Limited and the School Sports Programme have introduced a weekly Wheelchair Basketball session, at Brixton Recreation Centre. The session will be launched on Saturday 11 February 11-1pm and will be every Saturday going forward.
Wheelchair Basketball is the largest and one of the blue ribbon leading Paralympic Sports, with its roots going back to the late 1940s. Although initially a rehabilitation and recreational activity for spinal cord injured patients, it quickly developed into a competitive sport with a National Wheelchair Basketball League consisting of 65 teams playing across nine Divisions.
Lambeth already has an activity disability provision at Brixton Recreation Centre. This new service will support the existing session and create more disability sport and physical activity opportunities within the borough. If you want to learn a new sport and want to play with professional players. Come along to the launch and see the sport in action.
