Lambeth sports coach wins top award

A Lambeth sailing coach who nurtured a team of sailing novices and turned them into London champions has been named Coach of the Year.

Richard Sheridan coached the Lambeth team to victory for the first time ever in the sailing competition at this year’s London Youth Games Regatta. Several of the team members have been coached from absolute beginners to the London Youth Games and onwards to success at national level.

Now Richard, who teaches at the London Nautical School, has won the Coach of the Year Award at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Hall of Fame and Awards. Richard won the award at a special ceremony at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Afterwards, Richard said: “It’s very humbling. I was very fortunate coach because I had an incredible team. The amount of sailing talent in this team is unreal. My main job as the coach is just to be a motivator and point them in the right direction.

“I just had to make sure they turned up to training and just to instil the belief to go along with that ability. In the sailing regatta, we entered five of the six classes and three of them came away with gold medals and two with silver.

“The whole team rocked and thanks to them I’ve turned out to be Team Manager of the Year. The London Youth Games is incredibly vital for the kids to showcase their talent. It’s a must win for them and it’s a way onto national level.

Cllr Florence Nosegbe, Lambeth Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “Richard has been an absolute inspiration to the Lambeth team and I’m delighted for him as this award is richly deserved. Several of the team members had hardly sailed before he started coaching them, which meant their victory was even more impressive.

“We are lucky to have a team of truly inspirational sports coaches in Lambeth who work week in week out to help thousands of young people reach their sporting potential in a whole range of sports, so if you are a young person or parent who wants to find out what is on offer near you then I’d recommend checking out our website.”
