Around 12,000 Christmas trees have been collected and recycled by Lambeth Council since the New Year.
The trees have been chipped and will be turned into compost, saving them from ending up in landfill sites.
Lambeth has been running a kerbside collection service for real Christmas trees for the past five years. The 70 tonnes of trees collected this year is up from 54 tonnes last year.
Cllr Lorna Campbell, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Every tonne of waste that we have to send to landfill costs the council, and therefore council taxpayers, £128 in disposal charges, so every tonne we can divert from landfill really counts.
“We all have to think more carefully about what we buy and what we throw away, and whether we can find another use for it. Taking personal responsibility is what our Big Difference campaign is all about.”
