Lambeth schools worth their weight in gold

Creative schools across the borough have shown they are worth their weight in gold after a staggering haul of arts awards placed Lambeth among the very best in the country.

The latest round of Artsmark Awards saw nine Lambeth schools scoop the top gold award – with another two schools receiving the silver award. This places Lambeth as the highest ranked borough in the capital for Artsmark with nearly a quarter of the borough’s schools achieving the award at the highest level.

The awards recognise schools which show a strong commitment to the full range of arts including drama, dance, music, as well as art and design. Schools can apply for one of three levels – Artsmark, Artsmark Silver, or Artsmark Gold each year in November. Criteria for each level are detailed in the application form and guidance materials.

While approximately 15 per cent of all schools in England have an Artsmark, just over half of all Lambeth’s schools have achieved either Gold, Silver, or the Artsmark award, which is coordinated by the national development agency for the arts, the Arts Council. Lambeth Council’s Children and Young People’s Service represented by Lambeth City Learning encourage and support Lambeth schools with their applications each year.

Julia Lawrence, Deputy Director of Lambeth City Learning Centre, said “We are very proud of our borough schools. This achievement is not only a testament to the quality of arts provision in our schools but also to the creativity of our young people.”

  • Heathbrook Primary School (Artsmark Gold)
  • Lilian Baylis Technology School (Artsmark Gold)
