Cruising down the river – a good time for a good cause

Stars from London’s cabaret world set sail on the river Thames to raise money for the Mayor of Lambeth’s charities.

The Mayor himself, Councillor Christopher Wellbelove, led the glittering pleasure boaters, who raised over £7,000 for his chosen charities, Clapham Youth Centre, Trinity hospice and Lambeth Women’s Aid.

Cabaret performers The Boy George Experience, Sandra, Voodoo Mick, Jacqui Cann and rock and roll band Tempus Flight entertained the Mayor and guests from across the capital aboard the Silver Sturgeon.

The event, which takes place annually, was dedicated this year to the memory of two past Mayors, the late Tim Sargeant and the late Liz Atkinson.

“We had a fantastic time and a wonderful evening, “ said Councillor Wellbelove. “I am so thankful to all that came and Veolia for sponsoring the event. Best of all, every penny raised went to three very deserving charities.”

He spoke of how Tim Sargeant and Liz Atkinson were his inspiration for becoming Mayor and how during his many mayoral duties members of the community had talked of the wonderful work they had both done during their periods of office.
