Garden waste recycling scheme launched

Lambeth Council is encouraging green-fingered residents to take part in a recycling programme which begins on March 29th . The green garden waste recycling collection scheme will enable householders to do their bit for the environment by filling biodegradable bags – which are provided by the council – with garden waste. This will then be composted down and used in local parks and green spaces.

Taking part in the scheme and collecting garden waste is simple. Households are provided with 15 biodegradable bags that have to be kept in a dark dry space until they are needed. Once the gardening is completed the bags can be filled with grass cuttings, leaves and twigs, weeds, plants and flowers, or hedge trimmings. They cannot be used for general rubbish, soil, rubble, large branches or any other recycling. When they are full, residents call 020 7926 9000 to arrange a suitable collection date.

Cllr. Clare Whelan, executive member for environment said; “We have run this programme before and it was very well received. By recycling garden waste and using it in the borough’s parks and open spaces, residents are quite literally putting something back into the local community.

The scheme proved extremely popular last year with over 4,500 residents opting to take part. These people will receive a letter informing them about the new 2005 service and they will automatically receive a bundle of new bags to fill. Those who make use of the service this year will notice a change in the way the garden waste is collected. Last year there was a regular fortnightly collection. To help make the service more efficient and to reduce the number of missed collections residents will now phone to arrange a collection date as and when they need one.

If you haven’t used the service before and would like to take part, contact the call centre on 020 7926 9000. The same number can be used to request additional bags or email recycling@lambeth.gov.uk .

If you would also like to compost at home, Lambeth residents can buy subsidised bins to compost kitchen and garden waste. A 220 litre bin costs £10.50 , a 330 litre bin costs £13.50. To order call 0870 849 4877.
