Star foster carer Janet named #Lambeth ’s number one

Janet Leslie from Clapham has won Lambeth’s prestigious foster carer of the year award.

Janet, who has fostered for 12 years for Lambeth Council, was presented with a certificate and a pair of tickets for the 2012 Olympic Games at a special lunch reception hosted by the Mayor of Lambeth, Cllr Clive Bennett, and attended by councillors and staff.

Janet said: “I was very shocked and surprised to win, but very pleased. I had a lovely time at the reception meeting the mayor and fostering staff.

“I love children. I have brought up my own children and I have worked with children in school and nursery environments, so I enjoy fostering. It is hard work, so you need a lot of energy, but it’s something I enjoy a lot.”

Janet was chosen by a panel out of 30 carers who were nominated by staff and members of the public as part of a competition, which coincided with Foster Care Fortnight (May 14-27).

Cllr Rachel Heywood, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, was on the panel which chose Janet as our winner. She said: “I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to Janet. She is clearly a foster carer who relishes this role and it was clear from those who nominated her that she is highly regarded for the quality of care she gives and the positive impact she has. Along with all our wonderful foster carers Janet provides love and care to children at difficult times in their lives and makes a huge difference to them.”

Janet Reid from Kennington was our runner-up and was also invited to the presentation event to receive a certificate from the Mayor and her prize of a pair of tickets for the 2012 Paralympic Games.
